Follow all local laws
In the US that means compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and safe operation under CFR Part 107.
Is the environment safe?
- What is the weather forecast? Does your crew have contingency plans in place for high wind speeds, rain, excessive heat/cold, etc?
- Make sure you maintain a safe operating distance from people, buildings, trees, and other objects to avoid collisions at all times.
- Maintain situational awareness and take the environment into account when planning the overall mission.
Crew preparation
- Is the crew properly trained?
- Is the crew well rested?
- Is the crew on the same page about the flight plan, the mission, any risks and contingencies you might encounter?
Drone Preparation
- Do you have sufficient battery power to support the mission?
- Does your drone include obstacle avoidance?
- Does your system include low battery warnings?
- Does your system automatically return to home?
- What happens when you loose communications with the drone?
- Does the drone prevent operations in restricted air space?
- Does the drone prevent operations outside of the 400 ft ceiling?
